Free topic! - Crux Or Southern Cross

In this free topic I would like to show you my favorite constellation. Of the 88 constellations in the sky my favorite one is “Crux” called also “Southern Cross” in English o “Cruz del Sur” in Spanish. I love the apparent simplicity of this one, because many of the others constellations in the sky are composed of multiple stars and the polluted atmosphere of Santiago de Chile makes difficult to appreciate all their complexity. In the other hand “Crux” is always visible at night.

His name comes from the fact that this constellation its always pointing with one of his most brilliant stars to the south. This was helpful for travelers and sailors in the time when Europe expands his frontiers to the new world, America. “αCrux”, the star we see pointing south, it’s a system of orbiting stars -Just imagine suns orbiting around suns! So beautiful!

The anatomy of Crux its quite simple if we just focus on his four main stars -non amateur observation considers nineteen stars, but if we take a look at the sky, we will only see the main four. We talk about αCrux, the one who point south, βCrux, also called “Mimosa” is the second most brilliant, γCrux it’s a beautiful red giant, and it points North;  δCrux it’s a simple blue star and the less brilliant of the common four.  They look pretty close, but between them they have several light years of distance.

I encourage you to take a look at the night sky and see Crux with new eyes, you will not be disappointed.

Rembrandt

Rembrandt [1606- 1669] is the most famous of all the Dutch’s painters of Amsterdam's Golden Age of the XVII century. He has been identified as the master of the chiaroscuro technique, a style that shapes all of his works. His life is bittersweet, he is born as the son of a miller far from the capital city of the republic. He shows premature interest for drawing. In his 20's, his talent is discovered by one of the most important cultural councilors of the Dutch court. He is hired by the court of Hague, the place when he will develop most of his talent. In the follow years he will move to Amsterdam, and there Rembrandt will live as a required painter of the flourishing Dutch bourgeoise. Years later, when he's getting old -in his 50’s- and new public it's claiming for new styles, Rembrandt is marginalized of the Dutch painting scene. Let’s talk about his paintings. He developed 5 kind of different paintings. 1. Civil scenes .   Common in those times; the motive stres

My future job - Working as a Sociologist

In the immediate future, or middle-range time, I will be working as social scientist, basically, researching social order phenomena.  This job is technical in his most, but I would also like to expand and use my knowledge not just in mechanic operations of data analysis and visualization or writing reports, but also taking part in decision making processes. Where I could find a job? There are various opportunities and demands of social researchers so as in policy design as in private enterprise analytics. It’s also a possibility the option of working as teacher in several institutes, universities or even high-schools. I’ve always had an interest in teaching, so it’s an interesting open opportunity. The fact it’s that social research cannot be done just from the comfortable and warm space of a fancy office, as others do, so I expect to travel a lot. In every moment I have considered the possibility of getting into fieldwork to supervise survey applications, making pictures of an urb

Free Topic! - Online Free Time Activity

One of the most difficult things to do in quarantine it's having fun when you can't get out or far from home. The first month of lockdown was a heavy torture, because I only had days when everything was: college - eating - household chores - sleep...and repeat. One day a former classmate of Concepción said to me " do u want to hang out in a virtual books club ?" and I was, at first, thinking that it may not work, but later the weeks and the sessions we had, I convinced myself with the fact that it was working, and quite well! actually we have 15 members. Now we have sessions all Thursdays at 9 pm. We chose a topic in the week before and we develop it in "front" of everyone. It's an important place to share ideas and new readings, and it's very helpful to take away some of the stress that means to be confined. The platforms used are various, we started with the standard 40-minutes Zoom, then we passed to Meet, but the last sessions we have been us
