Rembrandt

Rembrandt [1606- 1669] is the most famous of all the Dutch’s painters of Amsterdam's Golden Age of the XVII century. He has been identified as the master of the chiaroscuro technique, a style that shapes all of his works.

His life is bittersweet, he is born as the son of a miller far from the capital city of the republic. He shows premature interest for drawing. In his 20's, his talent is discovered by one of the most important cultural councilors of the Dutch court. He is hired by the court of Hague, the place when he will develop most of his talent. In the follow years he will move to Amsterdam, and there Rembrandt will live as a required painter of the flourishing Dutch bourgeoise. Years later, when he's getting old -in his 50’s- and new public it's claiming for new styles, Rembrandt is marginalized of the Dutch painting scene.

Let’s talk about his paintings. He developed 5 kind of different paintings.

1. Civil scenes.  Common in those times; the motive stressed in some of these scenes are the power, sobriety and wealth of Amsterdam’s society.

De Nachtwacht - The Night's Watch (1642)

2. Biblical scenes. The tradition demands it. Rembrandt Is in the path of so many other great European painters, specially Caravaggio.

"The storm at the sea of galilee" - 1633

3. Everyday life scenes. The Italians tend to stress the role of Dutch painters like Vermeer painting futile scenes. Rembrandt in some way refresh this tradition, but it also despite it in his early and epic painting. This everyday life scenes are most common in his last period.

      "The Slaughtered Ox" - 1655

4. Portraits (and Self-portraits).  One of the most profitable activities for a painter in a wealth city is to take the best pictures of their wealth inhabitants. These portraits combine fine technique with assertive details.

"Saskia in a Red Hat" - 1633

5. Historical Scenes. Continuous inspiration for Rembrandt. This it’s a middle point between Biblical scenes and Civil scenes.

"Aristotle with a Bust of Homer" - 1653

Postgraduate Studies - Some Msc and Mphil.

Hi again! This time I will write a bit about my postgraduate interest. 1. Reasons to do the course Long ago I decided to stay on the subject of Urban Studies in Sociology. Later I realized that it was not a good option to seek a specialization matter, but to let it flow across our experience. Now I find myself between two broad areas that meet my interests: Latin American Studies and Cultural Studies; Cities are also an option . The main reasons them, are not only my intellectual interest but also the professional needs.   2. Where you would like to study Dreaming its possible, so there are two excellent and fast programs in the UK. The first one in London’s Economic and Political Science School [ http://www.lse.ac.uk/resources/calendar/programmeRegulations/taughtMasters/2019/MScCultureAndSociety.htm ] ] and the other one in Cambridge University [ http://www.latin-american.cam.ac.uk/mphil ]. The best holiday i have had 💬.

In perspective, part of this year's holidays where definitively the better ones of my life. They took place in the famous "Litoral Central", what is, basically, the closest beaches to Santiago, Chile's Capital City. Between other journeys, i stayed there four days and four nights in a tent on a small house’s backyard in Las Cruces. Crosses Town [?]. In those streets i had time to look around for three things.       Landscape . The sea, when you walk through the sand, it’s always there. Cartagena and Las Cruces are pretty close, and you can get to another point, just by walking thirty minutes. These two old towns are part of one in many bays in the Litoral Central. Its usual to see Albatross, Pelicans and Numenius. By night the rusty city of Cartagena lights the dark sea with his houses over the hills.     Society and activity.  February, the road that connects the different towns of the location are just collapsed, the tourists are making ...

Free Topic! - Online Free Time Activity

One of the most difficult things to do in quarantine it's having fun when you can't get out or far from home. The first month of lockdown was a heavy torture, because I only had days when everything was: college - eating - household chores - sleep...and repeat. One day a former classmate of Concepción said to me " do u want to hang out in a virtual books club ?" and I was, at first, thinking that it may not work, but later the weeks and the sessions we had, I convinced myself with the fact that it was working, and quite well! actually we have 15 members. Now we have sessions all Thursdays at 9 pm. We chose a topic in the week before and we develop it in "front" of everyone. It's an important place to share ideas and new readings, and it's very helpful to take away some of the stress that means to be confined. The platforms used are various, we started with the standard 40-minutes Zoom, then we passed to Meet, but the last sessions we have been us...
